Brighton

History: The Brighton branch of ACO was inaugurated in April of 2007 following an unsuccessful campaign by a grassroots group to save St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Since then we have been active in the community promoting the preservation of Brighton’s heritage buildings and landscapes. Highlights include the following: • An active campaign to save Brighton Public School that is threatened by demolition when a new school is built in 2010. We have said that a new school is of utmost importance to our community, but why is it an either/or choice? Fortunately our Council recognizes the heritage significance of this 1915 classic and has a request before the school board to cooperate with an assessment under the ACO’s Preservation Works! program. • Advocating for Council to appoint a Heritage Advisory Committee by arranging a presentation by Andrew Jeanes of the Ontario Ministry of Culture, “Supporting Heritage in your Community” and providing Ontario Heritage Toolkits to Councillors and staff. • Completing a ‘Preservation Works!’ assessment for the municipally owned Hilton Township Hall (1861), as a result of which we have been invited to discuss restoration and long term use with the Municipality. • Partnering with the municipalities of Brighton and Cramahe to organize a joint ‘Doors Open’ event on 21 June 2008. • Partnering with the Brighton Arts Council in Capture the Heritage, an art contest celebrating Brighton’s rich architectural heritage. • Sponsoring an old house restoration workshop presented by ‘Edifice’ magazine.
