PROTECT VIEWS OF THE LEGISLATURE, SYMBOL OF OUR DEMOCRATIC HERITAGE
January 14, 2010
Toronto, January 14, 2010 - An opinion piece in today's Toronto Star by Catherine Nasmith and Lloyd Alter urges protection of views of the Legislative Assembly Building, currently threatened by proposed high rise developments, from Queen Street and all points north.
"To have the silhouette of our most important civic building - the prime symbol of provincial democracy - overwhelmed by taller commercial buildings will say more than we care to admit about the relative importance of public and private interests in Ontario."
Nasmith and Alter point out that in other jurisdictions, e.g. Washington and Ottawa, height controls protect views of the symbols of democracy. "Try to picture President Barack Obama's inaugural speech with a commercial building rising above the U.S. Capitol. Those Washington views have been carefully protected for generations, as have views in Ottawa."
