Private Member’s Bill C-323, An Act to Amend the Income Tax Act (Rehabilitation of Historic Property), comes before the House of Commons on Wednesday, March 22nd, for second reading.

This bill will establish a tax credit for repair and restoration work on designated heritage properties listed on Canada's Historic Places Register.  It also establishes a tax deduction for the capital cost of property used in the course of such a rehabilitation.

If enough MPs support this bill on Wednesday, it will move on to Committee, and third reading.  Although the Liberals aren't officially supporting it, the government is allowing all MPs to vote freely.  So your email or phone call will make a difference.

ACO NWR member Jean Haalboom's letter (in the attached pdf) gives many reasons to support this bill, e.g. it will create jobs (renovation provides up to 50% more jobs than new construction), mitigate climate change, and help prevent demolition through neglect.

Get other ideas from the National Trust for Canada.  But please phone or email your MP today!

You will find links to the bill, the National Trust, and locating contact information for our MP in the attached pdf.
